Cross-Country Car Shipping Guide

Coast-to-coast vehicle transport requires more planning than a regional move, but the process is the same — just longer.

Cross-Country Car Shipping Guide

Realistic transit times

Cross-country moves (2,000+ miles) typically deliver in 7 to 14 days. Federal hours-of-service rules limit drivers to roughly 11 hours and ~500 miles per day, plus mandatory rest periods.

Book early

For long-distance moves, book at least 1–2 weeks ahead. Last-minute cross-country dispatch is possible but limits your carrier options and raises the price.

Pickup window vs. delivery window

Your agent will quote a pickup window (e.g., Mon–Wed) and an estimated transit time. Exact delivery date depends on weather, traffic and the driver's full route — not just your single load.

Communication during transit

Stay in touch with the driver. Most drivers will text or call as they approach delivery.

Weather considerations

Winter cross-country routes (especially through the Rockies or northern plains) face delays during major storms. Build slack into your plans.

Open or enclosed for long routes?

More miles means more road exposure. If you're shipping a higher-value vehicle cross-country, enclosed transport is worth strong consideration.

Plan for arrival

Have someone available at delivery, your bill of lading copy in hand and a flashlight if delivery happens at night.
